The morning sun warmed Elias's face as he strolled towards the office, whistling a jaunty tune. He’d just closed a significant deal, and the feeling of accomplishment still buoyed him. His shoulders were relaxed, his pace unhurried. He knew he deserved the upcoming promotion, and he felt certain it would arrive any day. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, a luxury his company provided, promised a perfect start to the day.

Inside, the water cooler chat with Sarah, from the marketing department, was easy and pleasant. He mentioned the new boat he'd been eyeing, a subtle hint of his recent success. Sarah laughed, the sound bright and friendly, and he felt a warm glow of contentment.

Later, in the break room, he overheard a hushed conversation. "Can you believe what they're paying Ben now?" "Crazy, right?" The words drifted over to him, initially ignored. He reached for a danish, completely unbothered. He knew he'd earned his place.
